White corn has the blandest flavor, yellow corn has a buttery flavor and blue corn has the widest range of flavor components.
Melon photo Melon
A ripe melon is heavy for its size with a firm rind, a slight softening and a sweet aroma at the blossom end. Avoid an overly ripe melon or one with dark, soft or sunken spots. A melon's sugar content does not increase after picking, so avoid immature fruits.
  • Cantaloupe - Most available of the melons. Cantaloupe is usually sold when mature but not dead ripe. Purchase a cantaloupe with no stem or stem fragment. Hold it at room temperature until it has a pleasant cantaloupe aroma and yields slightly to light thumb pressure on the blossom end and when the rind's netting is pronounced with a dull yellowish cast.
  • Honeydew - Large with a smooth, very pale green skin and sweet light-green flesh. A slight "bloom," faint netting and a slightly sticky feeling on the skin indicate ripe honeydew. If it is hard with a white or green-white rind, the honeydew was picked prematurely and will not become sweet.

    Pineapple photo Pineapple
    A sweet, fragrant aroma is the single most important key to selecting a ripe pineapple. A ripe pineapple smells sweet, especially at its base and feels firm when squeezed. Pineapple has no stored starch so its sweetness doesn't increase after it is picked, though its acidity decreases when it is stored at room temperature. Pineapple is available throughout the year, with peak supplies in the springtime.
